You know how your favorite grocery store will move things around, turning a familiar trip into a game of hunt and seek? If you are like most of us, you probably find these changes a little annoying (particularly when you’re in a hurry). However, every once in a while these changes can be good like when you find something new.
Where am I going with this? Well, your Ligonier Valley Library recently decided to shake things up bit by relocating a few familiar sections into unfamiliar territory.

Audiobook on CD Section
Audiobooks on CD can now be found just passed the entrance to our Re-Readable bookstore, heading toward the children’s department.
For those patrons who enjoy the Audiobooks on Playaway, you will now find them situated next to the Large Print section (opposite the books on CD).

Audiobooks on Playaway Section
Teens, we hope you will be the most excited by our changes! No doubt, you noticed how tight the shelves were in your section. We also imagine that you were wondering about so many favorite titles being sent to a mystical place called ‘storage.’ Well, we have good news… we relocated your section and now there is more room for your old favorites as well as the new titles you have been so anxiously awaiting!

Young Adult Books & Graphic Novel Section
The Young Adult Books & Graphic Novels are now located on the stand-out shelves after the Adult DVD & VHS tapes. Now you can browse for movies, then move down the rows to the teen section. The really brave can take a few extra steps and venture into the Adult Fiction section.
Come to think of it… when traveling from movies to adult fiction or vice versa, we encourage our adult patrons to make a stop in between! You might be surprised by the number of really good young adult books you’ll find.
We realize that change can be scary and even annoying, but it can also be an adventure! We hope you’ll find yourself becoming acquainted with a whole different part of the library… perhaps a section you’ve either never visited or haven’t visited in awhile.
Will we be moving any other sections around? Absolutely not! No way! Ok, it’s doubtful. Probably not… but never say never. Guess you will just have to stop by the library and find out.
If you have any questions or need help finding anything, please ask at one of the circulation desks and we’ll try to point you in the right direction.
Looking for a new job? Carol Silvis, author of Job Hunting After 50 and 101 Ways to Make Yourself Indispensable at Work, will present a program at the library on how to represent yourself to an employer in the most favorable way. Information includes updating your professional image, anticipating interview questions and formulating answers, and dos and don’ts of preparing resumes. Tips will be given for searching online job sites and individual company websites and filling out online job applications.
Ms. Silvis appeared on HMC-TV Channel 20 in June 2011 and was video interviewed by Tory Johnson for ABCNews.com. She has a Master’s in Adult Education and is an associate director and department chair at Newport Business Institute. She is president of Pennwriters, Inc., a 400-member writing group, and received the Pennwriters 2008 Meritorious Service Award.
This program is free and will be held in the Ligonier Valley Library’s basement community room on Wednesday, September 28th at 7:00 pm. A book signing will follow the lecture. Copies of her book will be available for sale.
*Bargains can be found year-round in the library’s Re-Readables Bookstore. Items are individually priced.
On September 11, 2001, the world changed forever….
Americans held their breath as the horrible news of a plane crashing into the World Trade Center’s North Tower spread across televisions and over the airwaves. At first we were shocked by the idea that a plane could malfunction so tragically, but then the news broke that another plane had struck the South Tower and we knew this was no accident. The tragedies where never ending that day. Two more hijacked planes would meet terrible ends, crashing into the Pentagon and a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Many people gave their lives on 9/11 – firefighters and police officers rushing into towers that would collapse; innocent people trapped in the buildings and on the planes; a group of Americans who took matters into their own hands and forced their plane down before it could hit its target… to name just a few.

Quilt by Carroll Labarthe
Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, a mini-exhibit is on display just outside the Pennsylvania Room. The exhibit includes a mixture of photographs, newspapers, magazines, posters and more.
Featured in the display is a hand-painted, pieced and quilted wall hanging designed and created by local resident Carroll Labarthe. The quilt depicts one of the Twin Towers, and was inspired by a photograph from the New Yorker.
The mini-exhibit can be viewed during normal library hours, and will remain up through the end of September.
Ligonier Valley Library is having an end of summer clearance sale! Our storage room is bursting with hundreds of donated hardcover and paperback titles. Some are a little dated, others are a little faded and have a torn page or two, but they are all too valuable for the trash bin. All books are priced at 25 cents each!
The sale will open in the library’s lower level community room on Saturday, August 27, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The sale will continue during regular library hours through September 17th.
Re-Readables, the library’s book store, will be open during the book sale; however, store inventory is not included in the 25 cents sale.
We love your book donations, but…
We do not need any additional items for this year’s book sale due to an excess of well-worn, older novels and titles already donated.
We are only accepting (at this time) current (hardcover and paperback) books, DVDs, videos, CDs, classics and collectible books in excellent physical condition for our Re-Readables book store.
Please call the library at 724-238-6451 prior to delivering older items. Thank you!

Want an easy way to know what new items (audiobooks, movies, books, etc.) have been added to the Ligonier Valley Library’s collection? We have good news! Not only is it possible to be in the know, but the methods are easy to use.
RSS READER – For those patrons who use an RSS reader on your computer, you can easily subscribe to our system’s RSS feeds – feeds exist for New Books, New Videos, New Sound Recordings (which includes audiobooks, playaways, and music CDs) and even for New Large Print. Subscribing to one or all of these feeds will bring new titles to your desktop. The URLs can be found by visiting the library’s homepage, clicking on the link to Polaris, and then the “New Titles RSS” on the left side of the Polaris screen. This method will ensure that you subscribe to the Ligonier Valley Library’s collection.
If you do not have an RSS Reader, no problem. Follow the steps above, but instead of clicking on the “New Titles RSS” link pick any one of the links listed below to see materials recently added to that category.
LIBRARY BLOG – Check here! At least once a month, we try to post lists of new materials that have been added to our collection.
The best way to locate the posts is to use the section titled Labels. Here you will discover multiple categories that will help you find what you are looking for from New Audiobooks to New Books to New Graphic Novels and Young Adult Books. Using the categories under the Labels section will enable you to see current as well as past posts. You can also use the Blog Archives or the Search This Blog features to locate the new material posts.
POLARIS SEARCH – In addition to the RSS Feeds, you can also use our Online Catalog to search for new materials. By selecting the Advanced search option, you can tweak the perimeters to help you locate new titles by favorite authors or by interest (subject or genre) and more.
NEW BOOK SHELF – New fiction and non-fiction books have a special place in our library. They are located along the fiction section just past the Catalog Computers.
We also encourage you to stop by and browse our shelves. Much of our new items have reserve lists (especially novels and movies), but every time you stop in you are likely to find something ‘new’ on one of our shelves. You can also ask a member of the library staff… after all, we also enjoy the new stuff! We’ll be happy to help you.
